The Jefferson Iowa News®
Senior XGames Coming to Jefferson! National officials have announced that the 2008 Senior XGames will be held this year in Jefferson sometime in September. The local shuffleboard team (The Jefferson Shufflers) and quilting team members are fired up. Shuffleboard team captain Agnes Grubb was very very excited when she was told about these plans. Unfortunately, at age 96, the news was just too much. Agnes will be replaced by whoever happens to be alive at the opening ceremonies. The top player on the team at this time is Ida Hallboom. We at JeffersonIowaNews ask that please no one tell Ida about the senior xgames, or that she may be captain. The games will be nationally televised on ESPN Nursing Home (contact your local cable or satellite provider). The team roster has been tentatively set, although changes are ongoing, due to health issues. Listed below are the current members from Jefferson's team: Events currently slated include shuffleboard, quilting, pitch, and an entirely new contest called, "can you turn on your oxygen in time?" In this event, all contestants' oxygen tanks have been pre-tightened to create an effect similar to opening a new jar of pickles. Walter Koenig, who has trouble buttoning his own shirt, will obviously not be a favorite in this particular game. If enough people survive the preliminary rounds, the medal competition will be quite exciting. Jeffersoniowanews will publish more details of the time and place of these events as they become available. Rick Bland, 08-011-2008 |
